A clinical dietitian has the rewarding and challenging job of applying the science of nutrition to treatment and prevention of disease. Clinical dietitians, who are Registered Dietitians, work in hospitals, clinics, and other fast-paced medical settings.

Public health, or community, nutritionists are those caring people who work for government and private agencies, developing and carrying out programs to ensure good nutrition and help prevent disease. Jobs in the US or internationally focus on groups at risk, like the young, elderly, or underprivileged.

As a consultant, you run your own show marketing your special skill sets. If you love the idea of clinical nutrition but also counseling others, you may become a Registered Dietitian offering counseling services for people with eating disorders, diabetes, heart disease, or other conditions. Other consultants use their writing skills to serve as technical writers or analysts for food companies or public relations firms.

Foodservice positions, at schools, hospitals, hotel/restaurant chains, and other institutions, combine these planning and management strengths in foodservice operations. Having an RD credential can help for some positions, there are opportunities for students with a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition.
