Gold Medal in Homebrewing

Food Science graduate student Alex Kivela and fourth-year food science major Lauren Thoen won a gold medal for a homebrewed Blood Orange Sour beer they developed in the 2023 Southern California Regional Homebrewing Championship in the mixed style, experimental and alternative sugar category. The students are members of Mustang Zymurgists, mentored by Associate Professor Luis Castro, a brewing club where students learn the basics of brewing science, develop recipes to submit to national homebrew competitions and develop research project ideas.

 

Young Dietitian of the Year

Assistant Professor Anna Cahn was recognized by the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the Young Dietitian of the Year in the Coastal Tri-Counties region. The award recognizes an outstanding dietitian under the age of 35 who has contributed to the dietetics community in California and nationally. Cahn serves on the education council for the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has been involved in the national registered dietitian exam writing process for more than eight years.

 

The California League of Food Producers

A group of students attended the California Food Processing Expo in Sacramento where they engaged with professionals in the fields of food science and nutrition.
